SOC 100 California Baptist University Beyond the Neon Lights Book Report

Approximately 1,500 words, not including footnotes

Taking Republican-era Shanghai as a case study, summarize and analyze the daily lives of the common people in modern China. In the summary, focus particularly on four aspects of everyday life: food, clothing, housing, and transportation. In analyzing the life in China’s largest city, try to relate some seemingly trivial matters in day-to-day life with big theoretical and political questions such as tradition versus modernity, the impact of the West, rural-urban continuity and disparity, pragmatism in China, and so on.

Use only Beyond the Neon Lights: Everyday Shanghai in the Early Twentieth Century to answer the question.
