A thin stream of water bends toward a negatively charged rod. When a positively charged rod is placed near the stream, it will bend in the same direction, not the opposite direction. Why? Provide an example of a specific molecule that contains a dipole.


This prompt has to do with a phenomena called a dipole. When atoms connect with each other they share electrons. This sharing is depicted with a line. We know that electrons are negative so based on where they are in the line the atom will become slightly positive or negative as shown in the image below. This happens to water and can be used to explain what is happening.
